Research

My current research focuses on the longue durée environmental history of coastal West Africa, specifically port cities in the NigerDelta region of Nigeria.  My dissertation project focuses on the economic & environmental history of the port city of Warri and traces successive waves of capitalist accumulation. From the slave trade between the fifteenth and eighteenth century, the palm oil economy of the nineteenth and early twentieth century to oil and gas from the mid twentieth century.
