The United States of Africa
by Abdourahman A. Waberi
The United States of Africa Abdourahman A. Waberi Week 1 of my challenge I’m starting off in the Horn of Africa with Djibouti. “ In the United States of Africa” by Abdourahman Waberi narrates an imagined world where the African continent is the richest part of the world and the third world is slums of Europe and the squalor USA. This satire is a thought provoking short volume at around 130 pages. I’m having a lot of thoughts already. Djibouti – Djibouti declared independence from France in 1977. It’s mainly French and Arabic speaking. It’s relative stability in the Horn of Africa means it is a popular choice for military bases. It hosts America’s largest military base in Africa and China’s first overseas military base. It also has one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, Lake Assal.
